The town of Tinajo belongs to the municipality of the same name which shares with the municipality of Yaiza practically the entire Timanfaya Park forming part of the land of the mountains of fire.
The elders of the place say that in the times in which the last volcanic eruptions took place, many years ago they took their virgin, the Virgen de los Dolores to meet the volcano and that a brave from the town approached as much as possible. to the lava river nailing a cross and begging the virgin to stop that event. And so it was, when the lava reached the foot of the cross, they say they stopped and built a hermitage in his honor.
This town lives mainly on agriculture and tourism because in this area there are many surfers to move to the nearby beach of La Santa about 5 kilometers or even Famara, which is about 10 kilometers away and they say they have the best waves and winds to practice this sport after Hawaii. As we have said before, the Chapel of the Virgen de los Dolores was built, which is in the Mancha Blanca area belonging to Tinajo and which is located in the southern part of it.
The municipality counts on a population of 6000 inhabitants more or less reason why the locality is quite calm with ample spaces. Practically all the houses follow the style of the island being small and white and have lands around from where to enjoy the unbeatable views of the volcanoes.
